Setting up your site for floating licenses (and what we need from you to make you your licenses).

Before we can make you your license(s), we need you to install the license server

• First, select a machine to be your license server. Pick a machine that will be around for a while, because there is a fee involved with transferring the license server to another machine.
• Download the license server software and install it on your chosen license server. There is a PDF manual that is installed. Make sure to read it.
• Return to us that system id that is displayed at the end of the installation process so that we can make you your licenses.

Installing your floating license.

On Linux:

You'll want to perform all the operations below running as an root!

• Unpackage the file we send you and put it into /usr/local/revision/floatinglicenses/Licenses/.
  Make sure the filename ends in .lic
• Restart the server so that it can read the licenses. Do this by performing the following steps:
  • run /sbin/rvlkillserver (to kill the server).
  • run /sbin/rvlserver & (to start the server in the background)
  • run /sbin/rvlstatus to make sure the license(s) is(are) being properly read.

On Macintosh:

You'll want to perform all the operations below running as an administrator!

• Unpackage the file we send you and put it into /Library/Preferences/REVisionEffects/FloatingLicenses/Licenses/.
  Make sure the filename ends in .lic
• Restart the server so that it can read the licenses. Do this by performing the following steps:
  • double-click on /Applications/REVisionEffects/RVLKillServer (and answer "Yes" when it asks you if you want to kill the server).
  • double-click on /Applications/REVisionEffects/RVLStartServer (to restart the server).
  • double-click on /Applications/REVisionEffects/RVLDisplayStatusInSafari to make sure the license(s) is(are) being properly read.

On Windows:

You'll want to perform all the operations below running as an adminstrator!

• Unpackage the file we send you and put it into C:\Program Files\REVisionEffects\FloatingLicenses\Licenses\
  Make sure the filename ends in .lic
• Restart the server so that it can read the licenses. Do this by performing the following steps:
  • double-click on C:\Program Files\REVisionEffects\RVLKillServer.bat (and type in YES when it asks you if you want to kill the server).
  • double-click on C:\Program Files\REVisionEffects\RVLStartServer.bat
  • double-click on C:\Program Files\REVisionEffects\RVLShowStatusInBrowser.bat to make sure the license(s) is(are) being properly read.

Note: on Win XP x64 and Windows Vista 64, the "Program Files" directory above may need to be replaced with "Program Files (x86)" or the appropriate 32-bit program file directory on your machine.

License Clients installation

• After you receive your licenses and install them, then download the client software and install on each client machine. Note that our Windows and Macintosh versions come with interactive installers. If you have many machines please note that after installing on one client, you can read the license client manual that will tell you how to transfer the software to each client machine without having to run the interactive installer.

How are floating licenses are retrieved?

This section describes how floating licenses are retrieved for our Shake, OFX and Fusion-native plugins.

• When you are in GUI mode, a GUI license is checked out. If none are available, the plugin runs in demo mode.
• Render mode occurs in one of two situations: a) when you fire up the host with no GUI,(duh), and b) when in Shake you render a flipbook from Shake (the flipbook application actually is a render-only applications as far as it reports Shake's status to our plugin). If you are in render mode the following license checkouts are attempted:
  1. if a GUI license is checked out for the machine, then that license is used to render (that way you don't check out a GUI and a render-only on the same machine if someone is already using an interactive license on the machine).
  2. if no GUI license is checked out for the machine, then a render-only license is checked out.
  3. If no-render only licenses are available after step 2, then a GUI license is checked out (if available) for the render-only process. (You should know this, in case you fire up too many renders, then you may find yourself without a GUI license to use!)

As such, GUI licenses may be used in a render-only context, but then the GUI license is not available for another machine. So what this means is that at the end of the day, if everyone is finished with their GUI licenses, then you can use all render AND GUI license to render with.

How do I prepare my machines to upgrade from node-locked to floating licenses?

Please run the node-lock license removal program below on each machine that you are upgrading a node-locked license to a floating license.

The program will create a file called nodelock.MACADDRESS.txt on each machine (where MACADDRESS is one of the MAC/ethernet addresses of the machine). Please return these files that the node-lock license removal program creates, one for each machine that you are upgrading to floating licenses, to sales (at) revisionfx (dot) com

To run the program, download and run the program in the following manner:

To remove node-locked Shake licenses run: rvlrmNodeLock RSMB3Shake

To remove MAC address node-locked licenses for our Fusion Plugins:
    For RSMB: rvlrmNodeLock RSMB3Fusion
    For Twixtor: rvlrmNodeLock Twixtor4Fusion
    For RE:Flex: rvlrmNodeLock REFlex3Fusion

To remove Fusion Serial locked licenses for our Fusion Plugins:

Updating your server and client server software

Below are the processes you need to follow to update your RE:Vision Effects license server and client software. These steps are to be followed only if you already have the client or server software installed on a machine. Select and click on your operating system for directions.

Linux:

You'll want to perform all the operations below running as an root!

First: Download the license server and client software from here.

Second: Make sure to update the clients and server at the same time.

To update the license server:

• run /sbin/rvlkillserver (to kill the server).
• run the server installer. Since you've already installed the previous license server software there is no need to reboot.
• run /sbin/rvlserver & (to start the server in the background).
• run /sbin/rvlstatus to make sure the license(s) is(are) being properly read.

To update the clients:

• Simply run the client software installer.
• Once this is done on one machine, then you only need to copy the programs rvlstatus, rvlsysid and rvlsetserver from /sbin to the other client machines (we assume you have already installed a previous version of the client software on the client machines you are copying to, otherwise see the client software installation guide to move the client software to machines that have not yet had the software installed).

Macintosh OS X:

You'll want to perform all the operations below running as an administrator!

First: Download the license server and client software from here.

Second: Make sure to update the clients and server at the same time.

Windows XP or Vista:

First: Download the license server and client software from here.

Second: Make sure to update the clients and server at the same time.

To update the license server:

• run the server installer. The server is restarted as part of the installation process.

• NOTE: the client software may be updated when licenses are in use. There is no conflict.
